Augustana College recently established a joint department of Art and Anthropology with an undergraduate minor in Anthropology.
Anthropology at Augustana College is especially strong in ecologically-oriented archeology and most students will have an opportunity to work on archeological excavations or in the laboratory. A special subarea of muesum techniques is also available.
Combining Art and Anthropology is not without precedent in the United States:
Augustana's department joins the ranks of about a dozen such departments
located throughout the country.
Two anthropology classes of particular interest to students of art are High
Cultures of Central and South America and Primitive Art. A special subarea
of museum techniques is also part of the new program.
The Archeology Laboratory has designed and executed a range of museum displays for both private and government facilities in the Upper Plains region. Our staff is prepared to bring "LIFE" to your exhibit needs. Consultations available on request.
Recent projects include designing and constructing many of the displays
at the Boehnen Memorial Museum and Visitor's Center at the Mitchell Prehistoric
Indian Village; providing displays at the Oakwood Lakes Visitor Center and
the Fort Randall Dam Visitor Center; and consulting on displays for the
Siouxland Heritage Museums in Sioux Falls.
The staff of the Archeology Laboratory has worked throughout the Upper Plains and Midwest on cultural resource management projects ranging from large scale, multi-year surveys and site mitigations to small scale investigations. All of our clients, large or small, receive the same high quality, personal service.

The Eide/Dalrymple Gallery was established to fulfill a series of roles
within the Augustana College Community and the City of Sioux Falls region.
The Gallery/Museum wing of the Art and Anthropology Department provides
a valuable campus and community-wide teaching tool. The principal mission
of the facility is to serve as an active force in art education by providing
an arena for the presentation of art within a broad cross-cultural prespective.
In accomplishing this goal, the Eide/Dalrymple gallery is actively building
an important research and display collection focused both on the fine arts
and ethnographic materials; implementing innovative display techniques to
strengthen visitor interest and involvement; and enhancing the cultural
climate of the Augutana Campus, the Sioux Falls Community, and the surrounding
region.
