EXCAVATION UNITS 5-11

Unit 5

Units 5 and 6 were positioned in the area of House 2 which was excavated in the 1930s. This House site was also the location for a reconstructed lodge constructed by the Lions Club in 1939, which burnt down the same year. The old "floor" surface was reexposed as well as a number of pits and postholes. However, upon removing the old floor we encountered additional pits and postholes in these units, clearly reflecting a complex history of use of the area

Unit 6

Unit 6, discussed above, produced the largest grooved maul recovered from the site from below the old floor layer

Unit 7

Unit 8

Unit 9

Unit 10

Unit 11

Units 7 through 11 have produced numerous midden layers, several reflecting materials left exposed to weathering and trampeling, but the lower midden materials reflect rapid burial, with apparent preservation of organic materials such as hair and coprolites. Many bison and canine skulls have been recovered. The view in Unit 9 is of a deposit of mussel shell.
