The Archeology Laboratory, Augustana College is in the process of making available selected documents and publications on-line as .pdf files. These files can be read with Acrobat Reader which can be downloaded for free from Adobe.

The first series of documents are a series of National Historic Landmark and National Register nominations pertaining to Plains Village sites in South Dakota.

Many of these nominations have been prepared with funding through the State Historic Preservation Office. This project began almost ten years ago with the development of a National Historic Landmark Theme Study entitled "Village Sites of the Middle Missouri Subarea A.D. 1000- A.D. 1887" by R. Peter Winham, W. Raymond Wood and L. Adrien Hannus

At that time two individual village sites were nominated as Landmarks, the Huff Site (32MO11) in North Dakota and the Vanderbilt Site (39CA1) in South Dakota. Both sites were subsequently approved and listed as National Historic Landmarks.

The Theme Study documented the National Significance of the Plains Village sites along the Missouri River in the Dakotas. To better protect these sites a program of nominations of individual sites as Landmarks was begun. A series of ten nominations were prepared in 1994, reviewed and revised in 2001. Some additional nominations were also submitted as part of two U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects.

A map showing the distribution of existing and currently proposed National Historic Landmark sites was provided with each nomination originally. This map can be seen here (693k), and has been removed from the individual nominations to reduce the size of the files.
